Retirement isn’t the end—it’s a transition. But what are you transitioning into, and are you financially prepared for it?
Hi, I’m Joanne Regan, host of The Retiretastic Show, powered by The Retirement Income Store and brought to you by Financial Security Group of Arizona. In this episode, we tackled a topic that touches every generation—inflation—and why it’s critical to understand its long-term impact on your retirement.
Here’s the reality: if you’re retiring at 65, there’s a 50% chance you or your spouse will live into your 90s. That means you could spend 30 years in retirement—longer than some people’s entire careers. And over those three decades, you’re going to need two to three times more income at the end of retirement than you did at the beginning. Why? Inflation quietly chips away at your purchasing power. Think of it like the Cookie Monster and your savings are the cookies.
Let’s look at some real numbers: in 1980, a stamp was $0.15. Today? Over $0.55—and rising. Now apply that same inflation trend to food, healthcare, utilities, and travel—the very things you spend money on in retirement, especially in your slower or “no-go” years when medical costs soar.
It’s no surprise then that the top fear among retirees isn’t running out of money—it’s the rising cost of healthcare. And number two? Running out of money. That’s why planning ahead isn’t optional—it’s essential.
So what can you do?
Start by thinking beyond the stock market. If the majority of your retirement funds are exposed to market volatility, and you’re drawing down income while your balance drops, you could run out of money faster than you planned.
That’s why I encourage you to explore non-stock market income generating alternatives. These include individual bonds, preferred stocks, and other fixed-income vehicles that provide reliable, predictable income. They’re not trendy, but they’re tried and true—especially when it comes to outpacing inflation.
